Kentish Express - 8 January 2004 - Putting Art in the Picture

Salon 67, a group of contemporary photographers, are again exhibiting at The Tiger Inn, Stowting, until Monday.

Participating in this latest show are David Bebbington, Tommy Candler, Carol Fulton, Liz Garnett, Marie Muscat-King, Scarlet James, David Jones and Mary Sampson.

David's objective is to produce 21st century images in the tradition of abstract photography begun by Edward Weston.

His work in this exhibition relates to this and in particular his interest in landscape work and in the interaction of mankind and nature.

Tommy has been a committed photographic beachcomber for the last three years.

Having spent most of her life travelling to 'exotic' locations as a fashion editor and photographer, she now can't be lured away from these shores.

At present she is working on a book A Very English Seaside.

Carol creates large-scale contemporary photographs of Kent land and seascapes featuring moving figures, fire and flowers, and creative flower portraits.

For this exhibition Carol has created new work illustrating movement.

Liz is showing abstract images of found objects and details of fishing boats.

she has experimented with different film processes to produce a series of challenging and creative photographs.

Liz has been a photographer since 1995 and has had work published in books and magazines and regularly exhibits her images.

Marie's work has been exhibited since the early-1990's in Kent and at Photokina in Cologne.

During the past five years her pictures have featured in books and magazines nationally and internationally. Her aims are to produce beautiful pictures and further explore her passion for this art.

Scarlet has won awards both for her monochrome work and manipulations.

Her images are sold in England and America and some of them have been used for publication in magazines and reproduced by greetings card companies.

Mary Sampson is a Hythe-based artist who works in photography and other media.

She prints her own pictures and she enjoys the 'hands on' nature of darkroom work.

Mary exhibits widely in the UK and in 200-2001 she was awarded a Year of the Artist residency at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford where her photography and sculptures can be seen on permanent display.

Salon 67 are keen to promote photography as an art form.
