Adscene - 31 October 2003 - Art for All to See

Ashford international station immediately conjures up thoughts of trains but perhaps not abstract art.

However, for the next few weeks work by photographer Liz Garnett will be clamouring for space alongside the suits and the briefcases in the business lounge.

The idea of the exhibition, organised by former mayor and champion of art in Ashford Les Lawrie, is to get local artists known by showing their work in places where Joe Public can see it without having to go to a gallery or exhibition.

Known for her travel pictures, Liz got her first camera at the age of eight and her enterprising nature soon reared its head when at the age of 16 she began taking pictures of her school friends, and then charging them for their portraits. She said: "I have always been interested in taking pictures and had a fantastic time taking travel shots but because you are working for people there are always constraints and I wanted to lose some of the limitations.

"Now the only person that sets the boundaries is me and I can push myself to see what I can do.

"It is great to be able to get my work shown in unusual places where people who might not got to galleries can see it and hopefully it will encourage some of them to take an interest in art.

"I also think that people coming into the station will see what a vibrant place Ashford is."

Liz's work will be on display in the business passenger lounge at the station until Monday November 10.
